Network Systems Engineer

The Network Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting the organization's network infrastructure and virtual environments. This role requires expertise in Linux-based systems, Proxmox and VMware virtualization, network operations, backup management, and security practices. The engineer ensures optimal network performance, high availability, and disaster recovery, while also managing remote services, web hosting control panels, and email servers.

Responsibilities: 

  • Design and configure network infrastructure, including Linux-based servers, MikroTik routers, switches, firewalls(PfSense,Sophos) VPNs, point-to-point tunnels, and routing
  • Implement network solutions tailored to business needs, including security, performance, scalability and high availability.
  • Manage and maintain Proxmox VE and VMware ESX/ESXi infrastructure, including installation, configuration, and optimization of virtual machines and containers.
  • Oversee virtual machine backups and snapshots, ensuring data integrity and recovery options are available.
  • Implement and manage high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions for virtual environments.
  • Develop and manage backup strategies using bash scripts and third-party backup tools.
  • Ensure reliable backup processes and perform regular testing of backup and recovery procedures.
  • Monitor and manage network performance and security, including firewall configurations, VPN setups, and routing protocols.
  • Implement security measures and server hardening practices to protect network and virtual infrastructure.
  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with security best practices.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot remote services, ensuring availability and performance.
  • Manage web hosting control panels (e.g., CPanel, Virtualmin) and email servers, ensuring proper configuration and security.
  • Provide support for MySQL replication (preferred but not required) and other database-related tasks.
  • Configure and manage DNS settings and understand DNS concepts.
  • Provide advanced technical support for network, virtualization, and server issues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex problems related to Linux/Unix systems, VMware, Proxmox, and network infrastructure.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure optimal operation.
  • Conduct regular network assessments and apply updates, patches, and configurations as needed.
  • Manage network access and security, including user permissions and firewall rules.
  • Implement and maintain network security measures, including intrusion detection systems and data encryption.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant ISO standards, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of network configurations, diagrams, and procedures.
  • Generate reports on network performance, security incidents, and system upgrades.
  • Participate in network-related projects, including system upgrades, migrations, and new installations.
  • Coordinate with vendors and service providers to support network initiatives.
  • Expertise in virtual infrastructure using VMware ESX/ESXi and Proxmox servers.
  • Advanced user of Linux/Unix operating systems; knowledge of BSD systems is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of DNS configurations and concepts.
  • Experience with web hosting control panels (e.g., CPanel, Virtualmin) and email server management.
  • Proficiency in backup management using bash scripting and third-party tools.
  • Medium-level understanding of network operations, including firewalls (PfSense, Sophos), VPNs, point-to-point tunnels, and routing.
  • Experience with network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers.
  • Knowledge of network monitoring and management tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix). 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in BSIT, BSCS, or a related field.
  • 3+ years in network administration, virtualization, and Linux-based systems.
  • Strong expertise in Linux servers, MikroTik routers, firewalls (PfSense, Sophos), VPNs, and routing.
  • Hands-on experience with Proxmox VE & VMware ESX/ESXi for virtualization and high availability (HA).
  • Proficiency in server hardening, intrusion detection, risk assessment, and ISO compliance.
  • Experience with backup management using bash scripts and third-party tools.
  • Knowledge of web hosting panels (CPanel, Virtualmin), email servers, and MySQL replication (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of DNS configurations and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with network monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix) and system performance tuning.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex network, virtualization, and Linux/Unix issues
  • Experience in network upgrades, migrations, and installations.
  • Strong skills in documenting network configurations, security incidents, and performance reports.
